Job description

Our client, owner of a newly-acquired 72 m luxury motor yacht, is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to lead the engineering department onboard a premium, privately operated vessel flagged under Italy, based in Monte Carlo. The yacht will cruise the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean / St Barth in the winter.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the engineering department, ensuring all technical systems (engines, generators, HVAC, hydraulics, water-makers, electrical systems) are maintained to the highest standard.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), annual inspections, and refit/co-maintenance projects.
  • Ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the engine room, including emergency procedures and cross-department coordination.
  • Manage spare parts inventory, contractor negotiations, budget tracking, and engineering cost control.
  • Collaborate closely with the Captain and department heads, providing clear technical updates, advising on performance, and supporting smooth guest operations.
  • Mentor, train, and support the engineering team, fostering strong communication and cooperation across departments.
  • Assist with guest-related technical activities, including tender operations, water toys, and onboard charter systems when required.
  • Maintain the highest standards of presentation, discretion, and professionalism expected aboard a luxury private yacht.

Requirements

  • Minimum 8–10+ years of engineering experience onboard large motor yachts (50m+) or equivalent commercial vessels; Chief Engineer experience highly preferred.
  • Recognised engineering certifications/licences relevant to superyacht operations (e.g., MCA Y1/Y2, STCW Advanced, ENG1).
  • Strong technical expertise across multiple systems: main propulsion, electrical power, HVAC, water treatment, hydraulics, and automation.
  • Proven ability to lead a team, delegate responsibilities, plan maintenance proactively, and solve complex issues under pressure.
  • Excellent command of English; Italian proficiency is a strong advantage.
  • Professional presentation, discretion, adaptability, and willingness to live and travel onboard for extended periods.
  • Valid passport and work rights within the EU or under applicable flag conditions.
  • Prior experience with tax-efficient employment or relocation in yachting is beneficial but not mandatory.

Work conditions

  • Contract: Full-time, permanent
  • Location: Monte Carlo base (flag: Italy)
  • Schedule: Flexibility required; long hours during owner/guest periods, with rotation and rest during quieter phases
  • Seasons: Mediterranean (summer) and Caribbean / St Barth (winter)
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • Accommodation & Travel: Full crew accommodation provided onboard; travel and logistics covered as per yacht operations

Salary:

  • Competitive and commensurate with experience (to be confirmed)
